Demand for Sri Lanka tea high
The demand for Sri Lanka tea in the world market has increased. The Minister of Plantation Industries says that there is a special demand for local tea in Russia.
Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe pointed out that it was only in 2010 that Sri Lanka had exported the largest quantity of tea. He claimed that he highest quantity had been exported to Russia. At present there is a high demand for tea in the world market. The country should get ready to produce sufficient tea to meet this demand. Sri Lanka’s main aim is become the world’s leading supplier of tea. Minister Samarasinghe pointed out that the Government had already launched a comprehensive programme in this respect.
The Minister was speaking at the opening of the new office complex and packaging Unit of the Basilur Tea Trading Company, a Sri Lankan firm which is popular internationally. Russia makes its purchases mainly through this company. Russia’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mikhail Vladimir, Parliamentarian Sachin Vass Gunawardene and Chairman of Basilur Gamini Abeywickrema were among those present on this occasion.
