PM backs away
It is reported that Maithri – Ranil coalition government is retreating due to the mass opposition developing in the country against the manoeuvres brought in through the budget 2016 intending to slash reliefs including fertilizer subsidy and school uniforms, abolishing pension rights of new recruits to state institutions and limiting business transaction in banks and several other anti-people’s measures.
As a result of this retreat the Prime Minister has appointed five committees to re-study reliefs that should be given by the budget. Ministers Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and Harin Fernando, Deputy Ministers Ajith P. Perera, Harsha de Silva and Iran Wickremeratne have been appointed to lead the committees while twenty Parliamentarians have been named as others members of the committees.
The government has already decided to withdraw certain budget proposals that have been vigorously opposed by the masses on the pretext of proposals by MPs at the workshops held during the weekend for UNP members regarding budget proposals.
Meanwhile, it is revealed that several more proposals are to be amended on the pretext of recommendations of the committees appointed by the PM.
