TUs To Complain To ILO
Trade unions have decided to lodge complaint with the International Labor Organization (ILO) about the government’s proposed pension scheme for the private sector.
Private sector unions have objected to the proposed pension scheme stating it was not beneficial to the private sector workers and that the government was using the workers’ funds to set up the proposed scheme.
Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU) head Wasantha Samarasinghe says the unions did not have faith in the government and as a result would lodge a complaint with the ILO.
Samarasinghe says the government was trying to forcibly set up the scheme in order to swindle the funds of the working masses.
He explained that the government was trying to introduce legislation to take the EPF and gratuity funds that were set up for the benefit of the employees.
However, addressing the UPFA May Day rally, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the government would go ahead with the proposed pension plan regardless of the objections raised.
