Special programme to attract foreign tourists in parallel to Sambuddhatva Jayanthiya
A special programme has been formulated to attract foreign tourists in parallel to the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthiya. Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena made this reference addressing a media briefing in Colombo.
The Minister said Sri Lanka Tourism expects many religious tourists to Sri Lanka from various Buddhist countries in the world for Sambuddhathva Jayanthi celebrations. They expected Buddhist pilgrims from Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, India, Singapore, Burma, and Nepal which have strong base of Buddhism.
Sri Lanka Tourism is planning to attract as many tourists as possible to view the Wesak zones, pandals, and other colourful illuminations around Colombo city and island wide, during the entire Wesak Festival season.. A special pelahera pageant will take place between 18th and 20th of this month Independence Square to BMICH depiciting Lord Buddha’s life and journey towards enlightenment.
The major component of these celebrations is the International Film Festival which will be held to promote on life and journey to Enlightenment of Lord Buddha.
According to the ‘Visit Sri Lanka 2011’ promotional campaign month of May dedicated to promote religious tourism and pilgrims. Plans are afoot to implement a series of programs representing other religions in the country which would be again amalgamated to overall celebrations and commemorations taking place during this month.
