Key next step is giving entrepreneurs loans with affordable interest rate, says CBSL governor
The seventh branch of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka was declared open in Nuwara Eliya on the morning of Sunday, Jan. 17.
Governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Arjuna Mahendran, stated that when looking at the whole country, about 42 percent of income comes from the Western Province, while the Central Province only accounts for 10 percent. He said, however, that this can easily be doubled by next year and the key element there is to see that money starts flowing. He added that basic things, like the shortage in coins, need to be addressed; otherwise all tourists who comes here will feel that this is a nation of cheats. But then the next step is to see that the entrepreneurs get access to loans at an affordable rate of interest, the governor added.
“This country has a better future. We have come out of a 30 years of war and now the future is boundless,” he said. In line with the event, a Rs. 100 million loan was distributed to 100 persons and 10 EPF cheques were also granted.
