Relics of Buddha brought from Gandhara region
The President paid floral tributes to the Relics of the Buddha brought from Gandhara region in Pakistan.
The relics that were brought from the Taxila Museum in Gandhara were received at the Katunayake International Airport by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Ministers and Parliamentarians. Thereafter the Relics were taken to the Vidyodaya Pirivena in Maligakanda. President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the first to offer flowers before the Relics. Ven. Balangoda Sobhita Thera delivering the Anusasana said that the President requested the Pakistani President to provide the Relics of the Buddha for exposition to mark 2600th Sambudhatva Jayanthi. The Prelate pointed out that the opportunity to bring the Relics to the country was provided following this request. Pakistani Minister Paul Bhatti pointed out that this would be instrumental in improving the cultural and religious ties between the two countries. The casket carrying the ashes of the great Indian King Kanishka has also been brought along with the Relics. It is also placed for exposition. The public is allowed to pay homage to the Relics today and tomorrow. Members of the Maha Sangha, Ministers and Parliamentarians also participated in the occasion.
