NFF takes to the streets – No ‘fast unto death’
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein arrived in Sri Lanka today (6th) and former Minister Wimal Weerawansa had said his party would carry out a protest programme against the visit.
Mr. Weerawansa, during Mahinda Rajapaska regime, in which Weerawansa was a minister, engaged in a ‘fast unto death’ type of a ‘fast’ calling UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to withdraw the advisory committee he appointed to advise him on human rights matters in Sri Lanka.
He laid down opposite the UN office at Thunmulla saying ‘he would not give up the fast even if his life ends’. However, he gave up the fast in two days and there were allegations that he had packets of ‘lemon puff’ hidden under his pillows. The advisory committee continued its mission.
Despite stating that Mr. Wimal Weerawansa would be present at the leaflet campaign to be carried out by his party yesterday (5th), he never turned up. His associates waited for him and when they realized he was not coming they commenced their programme.
