Indian-financed public ambulance service to create 600 jobs
The government has decided to launch a free ambulance service which would transport patients to hospitals without any charge. A programme to recruit staff for this new service took place in Colombo on Wednesday.
The objective of this free ambulance service is to ensure that victims of emergency situations are moved to hospital for immediate treatment. Under this new service, a paramedic and first-aid would be provided to patients who will be moved to a hospital in less than 30 minutes.
Under the first phase, eighty-eight ambulances will operate in the Southern and Western Province while the second phase would cover the entire country. The project was launched with Rs. 1000 million funding from the Indian Government, a move which resulted from the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Sri Lanka.
Dr. Harsha de Silva, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, responded to claims he said were being made about drivers, paramedics and doctors being hired from India to staff the new ambulance scheme. He categorically denied the claim, stating that 600 jobs were being created from this venture – all for Sri Lankans.
