Poson commemorated within Sambuddhatva Jayanthi year
Today is Poson Full Moon Poya Day. It marks the arrival of Buddhism in the country in 306 BC from the neighbouring India.
This Poson is of special significance to the Buddhists of Sri Lanka as it falls within the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi commemorative year. Sri Lankans the world over commemorates the Poson festival on a grand note, as it is only second to the Vesak Festival. Poson Poya day marks the conversion of Sri Lanka’s then King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism when he met Arahat Maha Mahinda, the son of King Asoka of India, who came to Sri Lanka to spread the message of the Buddha. Poson celebrations are mainly centred in Anuradhapura, treated as the birth place of Buddhism in the country.
