SPEAKER TO BECOME CPA CHAIRMAN
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa is to be appointed as the Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
About 600 Commonwealth Parliamentarians are meeting in London marking the Centennial of the founding of the Commonwealth’s oldest organization. The conference was opened by Queen Elizabeth. “Strengthening Democracy” is this year’s theme. The Executive Committee meeting of the Association was held on the 23rd and 24th of this month. Addressing this meeting on the second day, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa appraised the member countries of the peaceful environment prevailing in the country and the Government’s programme of enthroning democracy in the North and the East.
Mr. Chamal Rajapaksa who holds the Deputy Chairmanship of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is due to be elected as the Chairman at the end of the meeting. Plans are afoot to hold this meeting in Sri Lanka next year. It is slated to be held from the 7th to the 15th of September of next year. The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is composed of the Parliaments and Legislatures of 53 Commonwealth nations.
