Detained Persons Won’t Be Released Soon
The Justice Ministry says the removal of emergency regulations would not result in the release of some 6,000 persons detained under the emergency regulations and that there release is to be decided by the Attorney General.
Justice Ministry Secretary Suhada Gamlath has noted that the lapse of the emergency regulations would not result in the release of the persons detained under the regulations.
He has said there are other laws to under which they could be detained.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa last week proposed the lifting of emergency regulations that have been in place since the period of the war.
However, Democratic Left Front Secretary and Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara has stated that the removal of the emergency regulations would result in the immediate release of those detained under emergency.
