Former Gov. Jim Hodges has endorsed the campaign of Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Vincent Sheheen.

Hodges, who served one term from 1999 to 2003, said Sheheen had the right approach to building the economy and business climate for small businesses and improving education.

Hodges was a lawmaker when he ran for governor, just as Sheheen represents Camden in the state Senate.

This is the first time Hodges has endorsed in a gubernatorial primary since leaving office. State Sen. Robert Ford and Superintendant of Education Jim Rex are also seeking the nomination.

Sheheen thanked Hodges, joking "I think we all know how much better off we would have been" if Hodges had defeated Gov. Mark Sandord in 2002.
