US-based Global Financial Integrity organisation has revealed an illegal cash flow of Rs. 2.88 trillion out of Sri Lanka in a ten year time frame – ending in 2013.

CBSL governor comments on govt’s borrowing gap
The Governor of the Central Bank, speaking to reporters on Monday, commented on the government’s borrowing gap. He explained that the government’s borrowing gap this year is about 2.5 million dollars and there is hope to secure a certain amount of that from the IMF and the World Bank and such.
Welipenna homes reduced to ashes before dawn of the New Year
People living in line houses in Welipenna, who looked forward to celebrate the dawn of the new year on Wednesday, had their hopes and happiness reduced to ashes as their homes were engulfed in flames on Tuesday.

Govt to analyse Country Report on HR Practices in Sri Lanka for 2015
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Harsha De Silva states that the government will express its views regarding the Country Report on Human Rights Practices 2015 on Sri Lanka, issued by the US State Department, after a thorough analysis.
The executive summary of the report lists the steps designed by the Lankan Government to enhance national unity, following years of civil war. It also lists a number of incidents it understands as ‘major human rights problems’ that took place during the year 2015.
PM Wickremesinghe’s proposed 15% VAT increase to take effect from May
The new 15% Value Added Tax scheme, proposed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Parliament, will take effect from May 2, as announced by the Minister of Finance.
The increase will see the VAT rate rise from being between 8% and 12.5% to 15%,
Weapons stolen from Laggala Police station found
The weapons which were stolen from the Laggala Police Station were discovered from a wash-room in the Wellewela Sandagala Temple in Laggala early Saturday morning

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake has hit the coast of the Pacific island nation of Tonga, USGS reported. Another powerful, 7.8-magnitude earthquake has shaken Ecuador’s northwest Pacific coast, killing at least 41 people and spreading panic.

Rangana Herath, the premier Sri Lankan left-arm spinner has decided to retire from ODI and T20 International Cricket.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been ruled out of the IPL, after the Mumbai Indians’ medical team deemed him unfit for at least four more months.
