This prestigious tournament is the only hard ball six-a-side schools tournament covering the Island which is sanctioned by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association. It is an annual event much looked forward to by the cricket playing schools in the country.
The Munchee cricket sixes will consist of 36 teams based on the recommendations of The Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and The Jaffna Schools Cricket Association. Two leading International schools have also been invited to take part at this year’s tournament. Adding glamour to the tournament this year will be an under 19 girl’s exhibition match scheduled for the final day of the tournament. All matches will be monitored and supervised by a Technical Committee.
From the current Sri Lankan line up cricketing stars T.M Dilshan, Mahela Jayewardene and Dinesh Chandimal to name a few have taken part as school boys in this tournament showing their prowess to the many cricket lovers who came year in and year to witness the matches.
The teams competing in the tournament will be played with branded coloured clothing provided by the sponsors CBL. On the final day white balls will be used from the semi final’s onwards. All three days of the tournament will be covered with spot updates through local radio channels.
Similar to last year an art competition for the students of Wesley College is being organised for the final day. Discussions have already taken place between the authorities of the school and the master in charge of art, Palliyaguru. Letters along with registration forms have been already distributed through the class teachers with all details. The organisers would like to see parents and class teachers encourage their children to take part in this competition which will also be aired on live television on the final day. For further inquires parents and teachers could contact Aruna on 0773679108 or Rohan Amarasinghe on 0772303650.
A notable absentee at this year’s tournament is Trinity College who pulled out citing pre-arranged fixtures.
With a lot at stake the schools are raring to go with stiff competition expected.
Six a side cricket is exciting and is no more a slog game. It has become an art with a lot of planning and strategising being done to outwit the opponent.
