The US-Sri Lanka Trade and Investment Framework Council, adopted a Joint Action Plan in Washington DC on Thursday.

The meeting was Co-chaired by United States Trade Representative Michael Froman and Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade, Malik Samarawickrama.

United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power also participated, encouraging the Sri Lankan government to continue its vital progress on democracy, accountability, and human rights.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Power noted that in the sixteen months since the January 2015 election, President Maithripala Sirisena’s administration has made extraordinary progress toward these goals, and the difference in the political and the security climate is felt across the island.

Noting that conflict leaves deep scars in a nation, Ambassador Samantha Power said “I have never seen a country take such swift strides in so little time”.

She added that Sri Lanka demonstrated its emerging leadership in UN peace-keeping last year, when President Sirisena announced new substantial military and police commitments.

Ambassador Power noted that the Joint Action Plan adopted at the meeting will help the people of Sri Lanka see a democracy dividend in the form of socio-economic growth.
