President, PM, Opposition Leader focus on workers’ rights in May Day messages
President Maithripala Sirisena issuing a message on May Day said:
On this May Day, we should strive to achieve the aspirations of the working class people who work under the new democracy that emerged on January 8, last year.
Issuing a message for May Day, the President pointed out that after the people’s victory in 1956, the working community earned the privileges and rights that they have today.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also released a message on May Day.
The Prime Minister stated that the labour unions should safeguard the rights of the workers instead of focussing on political agendas, as this is for the benefit of the workers and country.
He added that it is their aim to to create the necessary background for this.
Opposition leader, R. Sampanthan said that through May Day we ought to help those who have narrow political agendas – by celebrating their achievements and uplifting their living standards.
