Dry weather to impact agriculture and hydro power generation
A Tea broker says Sri Lanka’s agricultural production and hydro power generation will be badly affected if the prevailing dry weather conditions continue.
John Keells Tea Brokers in its weekly tea report says, according to the Meteorology department the inter-monsoonal rains may be delayed, and the forecast suggest very little signs of heavy rainfall at least till November.
“The water levels in major reservoirs have come down to 35% and countries irrigation tanks filled only up to 1/3 their full capacity”, the report further added.
It says the situation could get worse if the North East monsoon is delayed.
“One of the attributes of the Global warming is the delay and weakening of monsoonal rain”, added John Keells Tea Brokers.
The Broker says for five consecutive months Sri Lanka Tea Crop too has recorded negative variances over the last year with September figures is also likely to follow a similar trend.
John Keells Tea Brokers says the effects of the irregularity in weather conditions in 2011 have impacted tea productions at all elevations particularly during the 3rd quarter of the year.
It points out, “Dry and warm weather has been reported in most planting districts with crop intakes being low”.
