Reservoirs run dry with no rains, country heading for electricity crisis
As Sri Lanka was heading for a power crisis with the hydro -power generation dropping to less than 15 per cent and the thermal power cost rising, the agricultural sector too was running into problems.
Due to the prevailing drought weather the water level of Lunugamvehera reservoir has decreased.
The farmers say if enough rains were not experienced within next two weeks the paddy cultivation will affect drastically. Due to the lack of water farmers have started cultivating green gram in their paddy fields.
The Electricity Board has already proposed to the government that the rates should be increased.
