Hundreds of trucks left stranded as heavy rains damage highway in northeastern India

Hundreds of goods-laded trucks have been stranded for over a week on the decrepit National Highway (NH) 44 in northeastern India as torrential rains lash the region.

About a 15-kilometre-long stretch of the NH-44 between Assam and Tripura states has been severely damaged in the downpours, disconnecting the hilly Tripura from the rest of the country.

Bad roads and heavy rains combined have disrupted traffic, which mostly consists of trucks carrying perishable goods and petroleum products.Drivers have been left without food and water.

The truck drivers, without help from the administration, are helpless and without options. Despite repeated requests to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the condition of NH-44 remains unchanged.

The situation is expected to be worsened as weathermen have predicted heavy rainfall in the region for the next week.
