Kapila Dahanayake, Emeritus Professor at the Department of Geology of the University of Peradeniya says that the risk of the Hanthana Mountain Range experiencing a landslide is quite low.

Authorities took measures to evacuate 46 families residing close to the Hanthana Mountain Range after it was identified as an area prone to landslides. The evacuees are currently being sheltered at the Uduwela Sri Vani Tamil School in Hanthana. The authorities took the measures to evacuate the residents in the area due to the appearance of cracks in the area.

Cracks could be seen in several homes in the area.

Emeritus Professor at the Department of Geology of the University of Peradeniya, Kapila Dahanayake visited the area today to assess the landslide risk.

After examining the signs visible in the area, Professor Dahanayake elaborated on the situation pointing out that these cave-ins occur because of the existence of limestone

“We should be more mindful of the dissolution speed”said the Professor who explained that the rate at which the limestone dissolves is extremely slow and the geographical features of cave-ins are visible in this area
