EU Heads of Mission express concern over blocking of news sites
European Union Heads of Mission in Colombo expressing concern over the recent blocking of various news websites has called on Sri Lankan authorities to ensure that rights of the free media are respected.
“EU believes that citizens have the right to access all information provided by the media and make their own judgements and formulate opinions independently,” a statement released by the EU Heads of Mission in Colombo stated.
The Mission also stated that the EU considers freedom of press is an integral part of any democratic system.
“The EU believes that the media should be allowed to operate independently,” the statement said.
