Budget 2012: TUs unhappy with proposal
Trade unions have expressed their dissatisfaction at the 10 percent salary hike proposed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to public sector employees and the armed forces in the 2012 budget.
The National Trade Union Center (NTUC) said it would continue with the struggle to win the balance of the demanded Rs. 10,000 salary increase after reducing the amount allocated by the government as a salary hike.
An official from the NTUC told The Sunday Leader that a minimum wage of a public sector employee was Rs. 11,730 and the 10 percent increase would therefore amount to only a Rs. 1,173 increase for a minimum wage earner.
The NTUC says over 360 trade unions affiliated to it would continue with the agitation campaign to win a proper salary hike in line with the cost of living.
According to the NTUC, the demand for the Rs. 10,000 salary increase was based on the government’s cost of living index and the minimum wage earned by the public sector employees.
The NTUC said the agitations would continue to win a proper salary increase.
