Over 30 news websites have applied to register – Ministry of Mass Media
Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Mass Media and Information says, they have so far received over 30 applications from News websites to register under the Ministry.
The process of registering websites operating within or outside the country publishing news on Sri Lanka and its citizens commenced during last month, following a government directive to do so.
The Ministry Secretary W. B. Ganegala told News360.lk, “We have received over 30 applications”.
He stated that those websites will get a registration number within the next two to three weeks.
Authorities requested website operators to provide a series of details such as the name of the website, its operating location, owner’s name and the address, editor’s name and the address, server name, IP address, details of serving journalist etc.
Sri Lanka has already blocked five news websites, which the authorities blame was engaged in character assassination of Sri Lankan citizens.
www.lankaenews.com, srilankamirror.com, srilankaguardian.com, paparasinews.com, gossip9.com and www.lankawaynews.com, are the sites that have been blocked.
A media group has filed a court action against the move.
