Future of UNP will be decided tomorrow
The crisis in the UNP has intensified. A secret ballot will be held tomorrow to fill the current vacancies in the party.
A meeting of the working committee of the UNP was held at the party headquarters at Sirikotha today. It was held with the main aim of filling the vacancies in the party through consensus. However due to the conflicting views the appointments for the main positions of the party could not be made. However it was agreed to appoint Joseph Michael Perera as the Deputy Leader and Gamini Jayawickrama Perera as the President. Accordingly it was decided to hold a secret ballot for the positions including that of the Party Leader. The secret ballot will be held tomorrow at the Sirikotha.
General Secretary of UNP Tissa Attanayake said that there will be contests for the positions of party leader, deputy leader as well as the national organizer.
Meanwhile the deputy leader of the party Karu Jayasuriya has presented his nomination to contest for the leadership of the party. The controversial situation regarding the leadership of the party has called for a secret ballot despite the statement made by Party Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe that a change would not occur as regards the party leadership. Several members including Sajith Premadasa are contesting for the deputy leadership of the party. Internal sources said that Daya Gamage, Dayasiri Jayasekara and Suranga Naullage will be contesting for the position of National Organizer.
