Myrtle Beach Marathon set for big expansion
The 15th Bi-Lo Myrtle Beach Marathon is looking to be a little more crowded next year.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports ( http://bit.ly/sRRNb8) that the city has approved the addition of 1,000 runners to the half-marathon, and an additional 250 runners for the full course. That brings the total capacity to 8,000 for the races on the weekend of Feb. 16.Organizers say they expect the half-marathon will sell out, since the 13.1-mile races are becoming increasingly popular.Officials want the event to grow, because it's becoming an increasingly significant economic boost for the area.Total direct spending by participants and spectators during marathon weekend amounts to more than $5.5 million, while the city's cost is roughly $33,000.
