PUBLIC TRANSPORT ON EXPRESSWAY FURTHER STRENGTHENED
Public transport on the Southern Express Highway is being further strengthened. Minister Kumara Welgama said that they have initiated action to extend the service until 7.00 p.m.
Two more luxury buses were today added to the public transport service which is operative on the Southern Expressway from Maharagama to Galle under the patronage of Minister Kumara Welgama. Accordingly the buses which operated at two hour intervals will now operate every one hour. The service begins at 6.00 a.m. It will now be operative until 7.00 p.m. Minister Welgama said that the new initiative had been taken following requests made by commuters and the success of the operation the Sri Lanka Transport Board buses.
SLTB Chairman M.D. Bandusena was present at the function organized to introduce two more buses to the service.
In the meantime Minister C.B. Ratnayake has said that plans are in place to introduce five buses for service on the Southern Expressway.
The Minister said that that the buses are being obtained on a tender procedure and should have all facilities and seat belts. As such the price of a bus will be very high and the installment that has to be paid will also be high. The Minister emphasized that as soon s they get the approval of the Road Development Authority, the buses obtained according to the tender procedure will be deployed for service.
