President says nursing is an honourable service
The President has said that nursing is an honourable service more than a job. Addressing the newly recruited nurses the President stated that a smile can act as the best medicine.
The President said that nursing is a social service. The nurses should treat the patients as their own relatives. He said that the country is developing and our attitudes should also change. He reminded them that they should also behave in a respectable manner.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa expressed these views at a function held at the Temple Trees to present appointment letters for 2500 newly recruited nurses. He said that there is a demand for nurses in every country of the world. He noted that due to the progress made by the country there will be international demand for Sri Lankan nurses. The President called on them not to forget their motherland due to gaining knowledge in science. The youths who represented all areas of the country including the North and East received appointment letters from the President. Minister Maitreepala Sirisena said that the government has launched a special programme for the development of the health sector that was destabilized due to the conflict in the North and East.
The Minister said that students who have studied in the arts stream have been selected from the north and east due to the shortage of students who have studied science subjects. He expressed confidence that this problem will be overcome in the next few years.
Deputy Minister Lalith Dissanayake and a large number of people who represent the health sector participated in the function.
