President to declare 2017 as year that country will be freed from poverty
President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to declare the year 2017 as a year that the country will be freed of poverty.
Speaking at the review meeting, of the Ministry of Maheweli Development and Environment today the president stated that the proposal in this regard will be presented to the cabinet.
President Maithripala sirisena also stated that steps will be taken to eliminate serious economic difficulties faced by the lower grade employees of the public and private sector. The President who reiterated that officials should ensure that money allocated for the year 2016, is spent in a proper manner, noted that measures should be taken to prevent the flow of money back to the treasury.
President Sirisena noted that the development should take place in all 25 districts at the same time. While development takes place in certain provinces due to the strength and influence of certain politicians, some areas show a lack of progress.,
Explaining further, he noted that development should reflect in all districts and all divisional secretariats, taking into account prioritising poverty and deprivation.
