Min. Navin Dissanayake speaks of rubber hub in Sri Lanka – a hub in Asia
A workshop organised by the Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka, together with the International Rubber Research and Development Board was held in Colombo on Wednesday morning.
The workshop was held under the theme Coping Mechanisms for Low Rubber Price.
The workshop brought together, national and international representatives from the industry, public authorities and research institutions, to explore and discuss opportunities and strengths related to the rubber market.
Minister of Plantations, Navin Dissanayake pointed out that although the country was a large rubber producing country in the 60s and the 70s, percentages have significantly come down. However a significant amount of rubber will be produced and there is a big concern over the livelihood of the smallholders who are affected by the low rubber prices, said the minister.
“More than an economic cost it is a social cost that the government has to bear”, he said adding that there is an idea, as a part of masterplan that has been undertaken, to make a rubber hub in Sri Lanka – and that would mean that Sri Lanka would add value in rubber production as a hub in the Asian region.
