Arrest reveals that human activity likely cause of forest fires
A forest fire was reported on Tuesday, September 27, in the Ella in Badulla in close proximity to the Little Adam’s Peak mountains.
Many trees in the tourist hot spot and thousands of acres of forest land were destroyed today, September 27, as a result of the forest fire. The fire is yet to be doused.
According to environmentalists and researchers, a majority of these fires in forests are results of acts of arson. Environmentalists also say that it may take more than many decades to restore the balance in the environment, following the destruction caused to the forests.
The arrest of two persons over the fire in Hanguranketha Forest Reserve proves that the fires are the result of human activity.
It was reported that 5,300 acres of forest land have been destroyed in fires so far this year alone. Yet, a broader measure is yet to be taken to prevent such forest fires.
