Sacrifices made by war heroes remembered as Poppy Season begins

- newsfirst.lk

The 2016 Poppy season, which is being held in remembrance of the sacrifices made by our war heroes has begun. Soldiers and civilians who have laid down their lives in wars across the world are remembered on Poppy Day.

Following the end of the Second World War, what was previously known as Heroes Day was amended to Remembrance Day, which is marked annually on November 11.

The red remembrance poppy became a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day after Moina Michael, a professor at the University of Georgia, who wrote the poem, We Shall Remember, swore to wear a red poppy on the anniversary.

The custom spread to Europe and the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth.

The SL Ex-serviceman’s Association organises the annual event in Sri Laka and the revenue generated through the sale of poppy flowers are used for the welfare of the families of fallen veterans.

From September 1 to the 11th of November 11, the SL Ex-serviceman’s Association engages in the sale of poppy flowers seeking assistance for the welfare of the veteran families.
