AP Moller-Maersk, one of the biggest vessel operators globally with over 600 vessels, places confidence in Colombo for repairs. Container carrier Maersk Ronneby (built 2007: Dwt 13,769) called in for her first special survey repairs during end February 2012.

The container carrier Maersk Ronneby called in for her first special survey and drydocking repairs to Colombo. Colombo Dockyard was selected after few rounds of negations and site visit of one of the superintendents to the facility.
The Colombo shipyard was the best option for the owners/managers given the strategic location placing the vessel on the trading route and the vessel discharged her containers in Colombo and shifted directly into drydocks for her repairs. The repairs were completed within 10 days, one day ahead of the quoted period
During this drydocking call the work package covered repairs in all sectors:
Hull blasting and painting, blasting of area approx 1,200 m2 and special painting of the hull for a five-year system with Jotun paints. Repairs to cell guides, hatch cover repairs, fabrication of new platforms (Misc) 12 nos. load testing of deck cranes 50 tons, free fall test of life boat davit, load testing of other lifting appliances. Excessive build-up of rudder with corton steel electrodes. Main engine turbocharger overhauling MAN B&WTCA 66. Renewal of pipelines with special material (pipe material – CuNi10Fe). Controllable pitch propeller blades seal renewals. Overhaul of bow thruster unit. Main engine liner horning work.
The owner’s interests were looked after by Abhiram Nagarkar – Fleet Superintendent, Yuvraj Shukla – Fleet Group Manager and Claus Ravn- Repair Superintendent, Steel Technical Vessel Operation. The yard team was headed by Ship Manager Priyanka Cooray, who was well supported by all production departments to re-deliver the vessel ahead of schedule.
The owners were happy with the excellent facilities at their disposal coupled with the quality workmanship, professional approach to meet the owners requirements were highly appreciated.
The container carrier was accommodated in the 30,000 DWT drydock for her repair requirements and sailed out direct from the drydocks to the loading berth in the port of Colombo. The repairs were carried out meeting the Class Germanischer Lloyd classification society requirements. Maersk Lanka Pvt Ltd. handled the local husbanding work smoothly.
Emergence of Colombo as hub for container traffic places Colombo Dockyard as a serious candidate for many leading container carriers touching Colombo for her repair requirements (drydocking/afloat).
The maritime industry in Sri Lanka has seen rejuvenated activity with the dawn of peace and lifting of all war risk restrictions and many international ship owners/lines are looking at Colombo as a serious destination for their drydocking repairs and marine requirements.
