Coconut production increases
The island’s total coconut production during the year 2011 has recorded a figure of 2,757.3 million nuts, a year on year increase of 1.6%.
During the year 2010, coconut production was in the region of 2,713.8 million nuts. Sri Lanka’s highest nut production has been achieved during the year 2004, which saw the figure standing at 3000 million nuts.
According to experts “changing climatic conditions”, “lack of adequate fertilizer” and “the use of coconut lands for other activities” is hindering coconut production.
In Sri Lanka, there are three sectors which compete to buy coconuts. Among them are nuts purchased for culinary work, desiccated coconut production and also for the production of cooking oil.
