GL says HRC resolution will not hinder " on going reconciliation programs"
External Affairs Minister Prof G.L. Peiris told Parliament today that the Geneva resolution would not hinder the government's on going reconciliation programs and ruled out any room for foreign involvement in the country’s internal affairs in the aftermath of the adoption of the resolution.
“The government has the power and ability to decide the order of priority of its tasks and programs and that will not be guided by the contents of the Geneva resolution,” he said.
He also made a reference to the Chairperson of the US House of Foreign Affairs Committee, Congresswoman Ileana Ros Lehtinen who has described the UNHRC as a rogue’s gallery.” It was her opinion that the US should disassociate itself from the council and the US must find an alternative and credible form to address Human Rights issues," he said.
He also revealed that diplomats from several European countries had told the Sri Lanka delegation that they had to vote as a bloc and could not make an independent decision to support Sri Lanka.
