Minister emphasises importance of occupational safety

It is essential to give consideration for the safety and health in the working environment.

 Minister Gamini Lokuge said that it would improve productivity and steer the country towards progress. He said that the economy is developed by the work force. Accidents not only harm the workers but also undermine production. He said that the workers should be informed about using the safety measures and it should become a culture. The Minister expressed these views at a function held at the Biyagama export Development Zone to observe the World Day for Safety and  health. The function was organized by the workers safety division of the Labour Department. A walk was also held under the theme of improving the occupational safety and health in an environmentally friendly economy. Scholarships were offered to the children of those who died due to occupational accidents and diseases, under the Shrama Vasana fund. An awareness programme was also held to minimize occupational hazards. Country Director for Sri Lanka and Maldives of the International Labour Organization Donglin Li, also participated in the occasion.
