Trade unions to complain to ILO

Trade unions have decided to complain to the International Labour Organization (ILO) about an alleged move by the Government to suppress trade union activities in the country.

The Joint Trade Union Alliance (JUTA) has accused the Government of suppressing trade union activities through court intervention.
The union has cited that the taking of enjoining orders against trade unions affiliated to the telecom, health and banking sectors prevents them from carrying out union action to win demands of the working masses.  JUTA Secretary Saman Ratnapriya has said a complaint would be made to the ILO regarding the latest move to suppress trade unionists.  He has further noted that a civil court did not have the jurisdiction to hear an industrial dispute according to laws governing trade unions in the country.
