Army called in at Katuwana
The army has been called in to assist police in maintaining law and order in the southern village of Katuwana in the Hambantota District following yesterday’s bloody shooting at a Janatha Vimukthi Perumana (JVP) meeting that left two persons dead and scores of others injured, officials said today, (June 16). They said police were still hunting for the killers, while the JVP accused the Government of having a hand in the attack believed to be carried out by underworld contract killers. The JVP’s Youth Wing Leader Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa was billed to be the key speaker when the attack took place. Dr. Jayatissa escaped unhurt. JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva charged that the government must take full responsibility instead of blaming others, adding that the identity of the killers were known and this information had been passed on to the police but there has a poor response.
