A major initiative to find out the best positioning of post-war Sri Lanka in the challenging global economy will be kicked off today by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce with its Economic Summit bringing together over 50 experts in diverse fields.

The ceremonial opening of the Sri Lanka Summit will take place today at 6.00 p.m. at the Cinnamon Grand whilst over the next two days several sessions and panel discussions involving experts will try and crystalise the way forward for Sri Lanka and its private sector.
At today’s ceremonial opening chaired by Ceylon Chamber Chief Susantha Ratnayake, the Chief Guest will be Senior Minister and Presidential Advisor Dr. Sarath Amunugama and the keynote on “Emerging global and regional prospects and benefits of regional cooperation” will be delivered by World Bank South Asia Chief Economist Dr. Kalpana Kochhar whilst the Guest Speaker author, columnist and management consultant Hurcharan Das will focus on “Are there lessons for Sri Lanka from the experience of SAARC countries.”
Via plenary sessions, the two-day Summit will focus on issues such as Sri Lankan Economy in perspective, Moving beyond conflict, Opportunities in Emerging Markets, Branding Sri Lanka, Skills & Productivity to compete in the Global Market, Ease of Doing Business – Sri Lanka ranked 89 – Fact or Fiction?, and Investing in Sri Lanka. The Summit will be concluded with a panel discussion involving several young Parliamentarians focusing on “Positioning Sri Lanka in the Global Economy.”

In the context of changes in the global economy, with slow recovery of the western economies and Asia gaining ground, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce believes that it is apt to review Sri Lanka’s positioning in the Global economy, at the Sri Lanka Economic Summit for 2012.
The Summit will have several technical sessions on opportunities in the emerging markets, branding, skills and productivity development, ease of doing business etc which are fundamental for Sri Lanka in the medium to long term and help Sri Lanka to better position itself in the global economy. Ministers, key Government officials and private sector leaders- both local & overseas, will discuss strategies on positioning Sri Lanka in the global economy at the Summit
