Vehicle Permits Can Be Resold – Minister

Parliament Affairs Minister Sumedha G. Jayasena says vehicle permits issued to government Ministers and parliamentarians can be re-sold.
She said that some parliamentarians often sell the permits to raise funds for election campaigning as they don’t have any other means of funding.
The Minister however insisted that selling the vehicle permits given for parliamentarians to an outsider is not a crime.
Parliamentarians Sarath Weerasekera and Dr.Sudarshani Fernandopulle were recently given Rs. 40 million vehicle permits each, the Minister said.
Jayasena said that a vehicle tax is not levied on the parliamentarian using the permit to get a new vehicle and additionally they also get a Rs. 5 million loan.
When The Sunday Leader contacted Democratic National Alliance (DNA) MP Jayantha Kettagoda he said that only government Ministers get very expensive vehicle permits. He said that an ordinary parliamentarian gets only a Rs. 20 million worth vehicle permit.
