Taking IT to the villages, Mobitel opens regional IT centre in Kegalle

As yet another step in its mission to lead Sri Lanka’s ICT transformation across the rural areas, the National Mobile Service Provider, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel recently announced the unveiling of their de-centralized IT Centre in Kegalle.
The Centre was recently, ceremoniously declared open by the Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology Hon. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya in the presence of Mr. Lalith De Silva, CEO of Mobitel and other distinguished guests.

The initiative was born out of a concept of the Minister – in line with His Excellency’s vision on the Mahinda Chinthanaya Idiri Dekma programme. In return, Mr. De Silva handed over a token of appreciation to Hon. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya for the opportunity created and the immense support rendered towards Mobitel to make this a reality.
Positioned as a brand that cares always, Mobitel strongly believes that this project further reiterates the Company’s national responsibility and commitment to develop the ICT transformation in the country, and thereby brings it one step closer to fulfilling its vision of ‘leading Sri Lanka towards an info-com and knowledge-rich society’.  An establishment of this nature will also benefit the residents and locals of the Kegalle area by introducing technology to the region whilst creating a significant number of job opportunities.  This in return will help create IT awareness as well as knowledge-enhanced individuals.
Mr. Lalith De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel stated that, “Our prime responsibility is to ensure that a world class, state of the art network with widest reach is in place. We have always been a prominent operator servicing the entire island. And what better way to mark this rapid expansion than by opening these IT Centres in order to further extend our support to the people of different regions. We constantly strive to equip ourselves with world class ICT capabilities and to maintain the technology leadership position in the Country. And while we are making profits, as a government entity, it is our duty to fulfill National objectives as well. As such, in the recent past, Mobitel also opened the first regional call centre in Sooriyawewa – one that today stands as the first call centre opened out of Colombo by a mobile operator. I strongly believe that such initiatives further reinforce the fact that many who live out of the urban areas may also have the right skills in terms of knowledge, talent and efficiency to serve our valuable customers.”
