New chapter in bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Seychelles

The Presidents of Sri Lanka and Seychelles meet launching a new chapter in bilateral cooperation. Agreement has been reached to improve cooperation in several spheres.
The official meeting between President Rajapaksa and the President of Seychelles James Alix Michel, who is now in Sri Lanka on a three-day official visit, took place at the Presidential Secretariat this morning. A 21-gun salute was accorded to the Seychelles President after he was accorded a very warm welcome on his arrival at the Presidential Secretariat premises
It was followed by talks between the two Heads of State. Sri Lanka and Seychelles, as two members of the Commonwealth and as members of the Indian Ocean region, have been maintaining friendly relations for a long period. At this meeting, both leaders pledged to further solidify these friendly ties. There is more space to strengthen economic and trade ties based on the geographical location of the two countries.
Both leaders discussed at length to make optimum use of it and further build up ties. Attention was drawn to further improve aviation and shipping ties. Talks dealt on the practical implementation of a security programme among the two countries as a solution to threats from sea pirates.
Two MOU’s and two agreements were inked in the presence of the two leaders. Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris signed the agreement in relation to cooperation in the health sector on behalf of Sri Lanka. Minister Bandula Gunawardena inked the MOU concerning the education sector. This will provide an opportunity to launch teacher training programmes promoting teacher skills and talents.
An employment agreement opening new job avenues in Seychelles for Sri Lankan workers was also signed. Minister Dilan Perera signed this agreement on behalf of Sri Lanka. He also signed an agreement on labour cooperation and legal activities.
All agreements on behalf of Seychelles were signed by the Jean Paul Adams, the Foreign Minister of the country. Several Parliamentarians were present on this occasion.
