SriLankan introduces “Paperless Flight Decks” with iPads
SriLankan Airlines starting from today will maintain “Paperless Flight Deck’s” as the carrier has introduced iPad Electronic Flight Bags replacing bulky mandatory paper manuals which the pilots use to carry during flying.
The airline says, with the introduction of iPads, its pilots will not need to carry 84 kilograms of paper manuals from aircraft to aircraft, from airport to airport and also flip through pages.
“The aircraft maintenance Logbook which is arguably the most important document of the aircraft, is transferred into the versatile iPad” added the Airline in a statement issued,
The latest introduction, the first by an Asian airline will help SriLankan to save large number of paper sheets and also cut down Jet fuel consumption as the flight weight would be reduced.
‘SriLankan has taken the lead in Asia to revolutionize the flight deck, realizing the vision of paperless flying and becoming Asia’s first airline to fly with iPad EFBs’ said SriLankan’s Chairman, Nishantha Wickremasinghe, in the statement issued.
The Airlines CEO, Kapila Chandrasena said, SriLankan will be the first customer airline to commence ‘digital flying’ using the Fokker iPad CLASS 2 installation, on the Airbus A340, A330 and A320.
He says, this will also help the Airlines bottom-line as millions of rupees will be saved via the new move.
Paul-Franck BIJOU, CEO of the Quovadis, the provider of the latest solution to the airline says: ‘We are glad to be part of this initiative and to support SriLankan Airlines in moving to paperless operations. By choosing to implement both PBN and iPAD operations in 2012, SriLankan Airlines clearly shows its culture of continuous innovation’.
