ICC World Twenty20 2012 Trophies arrive

The Men’s and Women’s trophies of the ICC WT20 SL 2012 were ceremoniously welcomed by Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage yesterday.
ICC Chief Executive David Richardson presented the ICC World Twenty20 2012 Men’s and Women’s trophies to the Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage at the Independence Square in Colombo, a National Monument in Sri Lanka.    

The ICC WT20 trophies were met on their arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport tarmac yesterday by Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ajit Jayasekara and ICC WT20 2012 Tournament Director Upekha Nell and two Emirates cabin crew off the flight from Dubai. Emirates is the official carrier of the ICC WT20 Sri Lanka 2012                                            

In true Twenty20 flamboyance and spirit, the trophies arrived at the Independence Square from Galle Face Colombo in a colourful paraded with elephants, dancers and drummers.

Commenting on the occasion Richardson said, “As we prepare for the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, we wanted to embody the spirit of cricket mixed with traditional Sri Lankan values as we welcome the trophies in the host nation. The parade, the drummers and the vibrancy of the event resonates the celebratory atmosphere that surrounds the Twenty20 format of cricket and especially the spirit of this colourful and cricket loving nation, Sri Lanka. The ICC World Twenty20 trophy tour in Sri Lanka will give fans the opportunity to see these coveted trophies up close and personal at each host city.”
ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 Tournament Director Upekha Nell said, “It is an honour for Sri Lanka to host an event of this magnitude. The trophies will travel to all host city venues and towns to create excitement in our cricket loving nation and include the people of this country in the celebration of hosting this exciting event.”  
The ICC World Twenty20 2012 Men’s and Women’s trophies ceremoniously arrived at the Bandaranaika International Airport on board an Emirates flight earlier today following their global tour.
The host nation trophy tour will take place in all four ICC World Twenty20 2012 venue cities of Galle, Hambanthota, Kandy and Colombo.
The trophy parade in Galle will take place on the 4 and 5 September and in Kandy on the 7 and 8 September. On the 12 September the trophies will be displayed at the Oddusuddan Murali Harmony Cup, a special ICC initiative in commitment to the local community, to be held in Jaffna. The Trophies will arrive in Colombo on 14 September and completing the tour travel to Hambanthota on 16 September, the host city that will stage the opening game two days later.
Along with the trophy parade in each of these cities, the trophies will be displayed at prominent locations that will be easily accessible to the fans. Further these display areas will also have fun activities ranging from cricket contests, papare music, face painting, to photo opportunities with the trophy for the fans visiting the sites. Fans will be able to purchase the official event merchandise at the venue.
The ICC World Twenty20 will be held between 18 September and 7 October.
