Trade unionist files HRC complaint against Police

An education sector trade union in Sri Lanka is to lodge a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) against the Police.
General Secretary of the Ceylon Teacher Services Union (CTSU) Mahinda Jayasinghe said the complaint would be lodged at the HRC against the pressure placed on him by the police.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had earlier summoned Jayasinghe to make a statement on the allegation made by him that the Grade 5 scholarship examination paper had been leaked the day before the examination. Following statements of the examination paper being leaked, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena called on the CID to investigate into the matter.
The Police however have stated that the examination paper had not been leaked and Police Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana has said that Jayasinghe would be arrested for making false statements.
According to Jayasinghe, the Police had denied that the examination papers had been leaked even before conducting an investigation.
However, the Commissioner General of Examinations W.M.N.J. Pushpakumara has said that systematic police investigations have been conducted on the allegation and no information has been received to prove that a question paper had leaked prior to the conduct of the examination.
