Partners in unity Government confirm they have not divorced
The two main partners in the unity Government confirmed on Wednesday they have not divorced.
The United National Party (UNP) and the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) informed Parliament that the agreement reached between both sides in 2015 is still valid.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the agreement is continuing legally and based on the approval given earlier by Parliament.
“There is no reason to cancel the agreement at this moment,” he said.
UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera also confirmed in Parliament that the agreement between the UNP and SLFP is still valid.
“We have not yet withdrawn from the agreement,” Amaraweera said.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya told Parliament yesterday he had not been informed of an extension of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of the unity Government.
Responding to questions raised in Parliament by the opposition yesterday, the Speaker had said that he will seek a clarification from the Government with regards to the MoU of the unity Government. (Colombo Gazette)
