Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son Namal Rajapaksa says he was blocked from flying to the US from Russia.

Rajapaksa, who was in Russia to observe the just concluded Russian Presidential elections, tweeted saying that he had been informed by Emirates Airlines in Moscow that he will not be able to travel to the US.

He says he was told that the airline had been informed by US officials not to allow him to board the flight to the US.

“Valid reason yet to be received. US has the Sovereign right of course. Sure it has nothing to do with my name, being part of #lka opposition or my travel from #Russia,” Rajapaksa tweeted.

Russia and the Rajapaksa family are known to be very close.
