Rameswaram fishermen continue protest

- newsfirst.lk

The protest launched by the fishermen in Rameswaram citing several demands — including the release of all Indian fishing vessels detained in Sri Lanka — continued for a seventh day on July 30.

According to our correspondent, they raised white flags on the masts of their vessel to show their support for the protest.

Our correspondent in the area said that fishermen from Nagai also staged a protest July 30 as a mark of support to the protest in Rameswaram.

Fishermen from Rameswaram said that if their demands are not met by August 2, they will reach Lankan shores with their families aboard vessels flying white flags.

Attention was focused on this during a media briefing convened July 30.

Director of Media Centre of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya expressed these views:

Fishermen from Tamil Nadu always enter our waters, not only on the 2nd of the August. Over 4000 Indian fishing vessels are reported to be engaged in fishing in the waters along the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka. Some of those fishermen stray into Lankan waters. Ninety-four such fishermen are being detained in Sri Lanka. What will happen on the 2nd of August is not something new. What they are trying to say is that they enter our waters everyday. No matter in what form they try to enter our waters, the Sri Lanka Navy is prepared to take all required measures to ensure the safety of the Lankan Maritime boundary.
