Sri Lanka-Korea Economic Co-operation Committee holds AGM

The 20th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka-Korea Economic Co-operation Committee of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce was held on 7 August at the Hilton Colombo. The Council focuses on promoting investment, trade and joint ventures between Sri Lanka and Korea.
Andrew The Travel Company Ltd. Chairman/Managing Director Mahen Kariyawasan was elected to continue as the President of the Council for the year 2014/2015. He mentioned that the incoming Committee would encourage more joint ventures between Sri Lanka and Korea, exchange information on trade and investment, conduct joint meetings with Korean business organisations in Sri Lanka and Korea and will serve as a recognised representative of the business sector interests in Sri Lanka.

South Korean Ambassador in Sri Lanka Ambassador Chang Won-sam, who was the Chief Guest at the occasion, addressing the gathering, mentioned that one of his top priorities is to boost bilateral trade and investment between Sri Lanka and Korea, because of the potential for win-win cooperation between the two countries.
“Having seen the potential of the Sri Lankan economy, many Korean companies are seeking new business opportunities in various sectors. To mention a few, Korean construction companies are participating in the construction of the Waterfront Integrated Resort Project, the largest private sector project in Sri Lanka. In addition, more than 60 companies are actively doing business in Sri Lanka and we are expecting more companies to enter the Sri Lankan market in the near future,” added Chang Won-sam.
Transmarine Ltd. CEO John Shiran Dissanayake and Alpha Tours Ltd. Managing Director Priyantha Mendis were appointed as Vice Presidents respectively.
The following Committee members were elected to the Committee of the Sri Lanka – Korea Economic Co-operation Committee: Mahesh Pasqual, Isuru Engineering Ltd., Chamara Udugama, Southern Tea Producers Ltd., S.C. Byun, South Lighting Lanka Ltd., Nuwan Wimalana, Delmege Forsyth & Co. Ltd., Iqram Cuttilan, Shipping & Cargo Logistics Ltd., Shamil Mendis, Spear International Ltd., K. Kunendran, Abans Ltd., Godwin Perera, MD, Vaughan Chemicals Ltd.
Membership of the Council is open to individual persons, partnerships, companies, corporations or other organisations engaged in trade, tourism or services with Korea or engaged in joint ventures with Korean organisations or interested in entering into or promoting trade, tourism, services or joint ventures with Korean organisations.
“We wish to strengthen our membership by inviting potential companies to join the Sri Lanka-Korea Econ-omic Co-operation Committee,” said Kariyawasan.
