Stern action if prohibited nets are used

Stern action will be taken against fishermen who use prohibited fishing nets. Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that he had issued instructions to the police to nab such fishermen.

The Minister was speaking after inspecting activities of the Kapparatota Anchorage at Weligama in Matara. The Minister was apprised of the difficulties the fishermen had to experience due to the sand dumps in the vicinity of the anchorage. He told officials of the Fisheries Corporation to take immediate action ro remove the sand with the help of machines. Minister Senaratne instructed the CEYNOR Foundation to provide fishermen the required gear at reduced prices. He was of the view that a building should be put up at the premises of the Anchorage to house the fish market outlet. Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was present on this occasion.
