Sri Lanka and Ukraine sign three agreements

Sri Lankan and Ukrainian leaders hold bilateral talks to further solidify relations between the two countries. The two countries have signed three agreements.

President Rajapaksa is visiting Ukraine at the invitation of his Ukrainian counterpart Victor Yanukovych. He arrived at the Kiev’s Boryspil International Airport last night. He was accorded a very warm welcome at the airport. The President is the first Sri Lankan Head of State to visit that country. The Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister Kostyantyn Gryshchenko and the Deputy Mayor of Kiev were among those present to welcome the President and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and the entourage.

The President paid floral tributes to the monument of the Ukrainian unidentified soldiers this morning. This monument has been put up at the Internal Glory Park in Kiev in remembrance of thousands of soldiers who were killed or disappeared during the Second World war. First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and members of the Sri Lankan delegation were present on this occasion.

The two leaders had their bilateral discussion this afternoon. They focused attention on several matters crucial to the two countries. More attention was focused on socio-economic cooperation and the further solidification of bilateral ties. After the bilateral talks, three agreements related to tourism, shipping, transport and Defence sectors were inked.

The agreement on cooperation in the Tourism industry was inked by Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga and the Ukrainian Cultural and Tourism Affairs Minister Mikhail Kulinayak. President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and the Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhaylo Ezhel signed the agreement on Defence and technical affairs cooperation. Another agreement on mutual cooperation on classified information was also signed. President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Ukrainian Defence Services Deputy Chairman Fodoko inked this agreement.
